Hyundai IONIQ 5 EV Revealed, Can Run Up To 480kms On Single Charge

Hyundai Motors has revealed its Ioniq 5 electric crossover. Based on the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), it will be the first model under Hyundai’s new Ioniq electric sub-brand. This flexible platform will also underpin several other upcoming Hyundai & Kia electric vehicles, including the Ioniq 6 sedan and the Ioniq 7 SUV. Hyundai will launch the IONIQ 5 overseas by mid-2021.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 – Design & Features

The design of IONIQ 5 is inspired by Hyundai's 45 EV concept car, which further takes inspiration from the carmaker’s first production car- the Pony. It gets a clamshell-bonnet and pixel-shaped front and rear lights. It features clean lines, auto flush door handles, and 20-inch alloy wheels, which makes it stand out from the other Hyundai cars that mostly come with fluidic design elements.

IONIQ 5's interior is based on the ‘Living Space’ theme. As a result, the cabin is very much spacious and relaxing. The dashboard of the upcoming Hyundai EV is governed by the two 12-inch screens with Bluelink-connected technology. The center console of the car is movable and can slide back by up to 140mm. Further, it also gets adjustable seats that slide and recline. Interestingly, many interior parts, including the seats, door trim, floor, and armrest, etc are filled with recycled and sustainably sourced materials like plant-based wools, recycled PET bottles, eco-processed leather, and bio paint, etc.

The IONIQ 5 also gets Hyundai's latest futuristic augmented reality (AR) head-up display (HUD), which uses the windshield as a display screen. It also comes equipped with Hyundai SmartSense technology that comprises reader-based active safety features such as a surround-view monitor, forward collision-avoidance assist, high beam assist, intelligent speed limit assist, highway driving assist 2, driver attention warning, rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance assist, parking collision-avoidance assist, and remote smart parking assist.

Talking about the dimensions, the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 is 4,635mm long, 1,890mm wide, and 1,605mm tall. Its wheelbase is 3,000mm and it offers a boot space of 531-liters, which can be further stretched to 1,591-litres by folding the second-row seats. Interestingly, the battery pack is located between the front and rear axles, inside the floor, which offers more generous cabin space.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 – Powertrain

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is available with two battery options – 58kWh and 72.6kWh. Both battery packs can be had with either a rear-wheel or an all-wheel-drivetrain. The rear-wheel-drive model gets a single motor for the rear axle, whereas the AWD trim gets two motors placed on each axle. The larger battery pack with an AWD setup makes out 306PS of maximum grunt and 605Nm of peak torque. It is claimed to achieve 0-100kmph in just 5.2 seconds before reaching the top speed of 185kmph. With its 2WD model, Hyundai claims a WLTP-tested range of around 470-480kms.

The Ioniq 5 is compatible with up to 220kW DC fast charging, which can juice it up from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes. It also supports both 400V and 800V charging technology as well as the ''Vehicle to Load (V2L)" tech, which enables it to act as a 3.6kW charger for other electric vehicles or devices.

Will Hyundai launch it in India?

There are no official words from Hyundai regarding its IONIQ brand's launch in India. As of now, Kona Electric is the only EV from the Korean makers in our market, which is priced from Rs 23.75 lakh to Rs 23.94 lakh (ex-showroom). It packs in a 39.2kWh battery that delivers an ARAI-claimed range of 452km. In the Indian market, Hyundai Kona Electric competes with MG ZS EV.
