For the people not in know, Maruti Suzuki is not offering any diesel model in India since the implementation of BS6 emission norms in April 2020. The reason for discontinuation was the high costs associated with updating diesel motors to meet strict emissions measures. However, ever since the termination of Maruti's diesel powertrain, there were rumors that a BS6-compliant diesel engine will come shortly, and now these stories will soon turn true with the introduction of its 1.5-liter diesel engine in the coming months.

According to the reports, the upcoming BS6 diesel engine will be an in-house developed unit. It is likely to retain its engine output, which was 95PS/225Nm in the BS4 era. The frugal mill is expected to be available with both a 5-speed manual and a torque converter automatic transmission.

As we have seen, Maruti sales have been gradually decreasing over the past several months.  The re-introduction of the diesel engine could help Maruti Suzuki to retrieve its market share.

As of now, there are no reports regarding the comeback of Maruti's most popular Fiat-sourced 1.3-liter diesel engine, which had powered a large number of Marutis over the years, including Swift, Dzire, Ignis, Baleno, Vitara Brezza & S-Cross.
