Exclusive: Tata To Launch A New Variant Of Altroz Tomorrow #YourSantaAltroz

Tata Motors is all set to launch a new variant of Altroz premium hatchback. The brand has recently shared a new teaser video and images on social media platforms, stating“#YourSantaAltroz”. Tata has also declared that this Altroz's new trim will go on sale tomorrow i.e., on 15th December 2020.

Tata hasn't shared any details about the variant, but it is likely to be the turbocharged version of Altroz hot-hatch. Though the festival of Christmas is nearby, therefore, Tata could also introduce a special edition variant or bring exciting offers, and save the Turbocharged model for later.

The carmaker has been testing the Altroz's turbocharged model for quite some time. It will come with a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine, which is capable of producing 110PS of maximum power and 140Nm of peak torque. This engine will be paired with a 5-speed manual and a new 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT) as well. It will be sourced from Schaeffler, and its supply will be taken care of by the Lumax.

As far as design is concerned, the Altroz turbo will look similar to the regular variants. However, it will get a "Turbo" badging on the rear black portion. Tata could also introduce some new paint schemes, especially for the turbocharged/DCT trims.

Currently, the Tata Altroz is available with 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engine. The petrol engine generates 86PS/113Nm while the diesel churns out 90PS/200Nm of maximum output. Both engines are only available with a 5-speed manual gearbox.

The Altroz is offered in 6 variants: XE, XM, XM+, XT, XZ, and XZ (O), which are priced from Rs 5.44 lakh to Rs 8.95 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Tata also offers four factory customization optional packages, Rythm, Style, Luxe and Urban, that cost up to Rs 39,000 over the standard trims. The Altroz Turbo, on the other hand, is expected to be offered in four variants: XT, XT(O), XZ and XZ(O). The lower-spec XE and XM trims might not get this new powertrain choice.

In terms of pricing, the Altroz Turbo could carry a premium of up to Rs 1.5 lakh over the naturally aspirated petrol variants. Once launched, it will strengthen Altroz's competition against the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Toyota Glanza, Honda Jazz, Hyundai i20, and Volkswagen Polo. All these cars are available with petrol-automatic combinations, and the Hyundai i20 & VW Polo comes with 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, while the Korean offering is also available with a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol & 1.5-litre diesel engine. Honda Jazz too gets diesel engine choice, whereas the Baleno & Glanza offer petrol-hybrid powertrain choice.
