In terms of equipment, the TRD Edition offered some additional features over the standard variant such as a 360-degree parking camera, auto-folding side mirrors (ORVM), and an illuminated scuff plate. Toyota also offered an optional "Special Technology Package" with this limited edition. Under this package, the brand offered premium tech goodies like a head-up display (HUD), a rear wireless phone charger, air purifier, tire pressure monitoring system, dash camera/digital video recorder (DVR), and puddle lamps.

The Fortuner TRD was powered by the 2.8-liter diesel engine (177PS/450Nm), mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. It was offered with both 4×2 and 4×4 drivetrain options. The standard Toyota Fortuner also get a manual gearbox choice with the diesel engine as well as a 2.7-liter petrol engine option. The petrol unit comes with both 6-speed manual and automatic gearbox options, but it misses out on the 4×4 drivetrain.

In the Indian market, the Toyota Fortuner TRD had a direct competition with the Ford Endeavour Sport, which is currently available for sale at Rs 35.10 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
