But how does it fare against segment's bestseller Maruti Baleno? Let’s find out: –

Note: – Since Maruti Baleno is only available with the petrol engine, hence we have only compared the petrol variants of both the cars.

Takeaways

  • Here we have put those variants in a row, which do not have much difference in their prices.
  • Hyundai i20 is available with two petrol engines: 1.2-litre naturally aspirated and 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol. The 1.2-litre engine is available with both 5-speed manual (MT) and CVT transmission options, whereas the turbocharged engine can be had with either a 6-speed iMT or 7-speed DCT automatic transmission.
  • Maruti offers the Baleno with a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine that comes paired to either a 5-speed manual or a CVT transmission. It also gets a 1.2-litre Dual jet petrol engine with the mild-hybrid system, paired to a 5-speed manual transmission only.
  • The new i20's 1.2-litre variants are available in the price range of Rs 6.79 lakh and Rs 9.70 lakh, while the 1.0-litre turbocharged version is priced between Rs 8.80 lakh and 11.18 lakh.
  • The Baleno is priced between Rs 5.63 lakh and Rs 8.96 lakh, and the Delta and Zeta variants with the mild-hybrid tech are priced at Rs 7.33 lakh and Rs 7.89 lakh respectively.

  • The new i20 is a relatively premium and better loaded than the Baleno, and it is clearly reflected from their price tag.
  • The price difference between both car's entry-level variants is more than Rs 1 lakh. Even the Baleno's Zeta MT is quite a par with i20's base variant.
  • The pricing of i20's second to base model is pretty close to the top-manual trim of the Baleno.
  • The price difference between both model's 1.2-litre top CVT trim is of Rs 74,000.

Verdict

The Baleno is clearly a more affordable choice here. But the new i20 is better loaded than the Baleno. It gets many segment-first features like 10.25-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system (largest in the segment), connected car technology with remote control function, air purifier, electric sunroof, wireless charger with cooling pad, tyre pressure monitoring system, hill start assist and up to 6 airbags. Based on your needs, pick the i20, if comfort and features are your priority. However, if your preference is higher mileage and if your budget is restricted, then we’d recommend the Baleno instead.
