BYD Atto 3 Secured 5-Star Safety Rating In Euro NCAP Crash Tests

The BYD Atto 3 electric SUV, which was recently revealed in India, secured a full 5-star safety rating in the Euro NCAP crash tests with impressive 91% scores in Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), 89% in Child Occupant Protection (COP), 69% in Vulnerable Road Users test and 71% in Safety Assist.

Euro NCAP Crash & Safety Tests of BYD ATTO 3 2022
  • The Atto 3 EV used in the crash test had all the safety features offered in its Indian-spec version, such as 7 airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchors, electronic stability control, and a suite of ADAS features.
  • Starting with the Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), the EV was subjected to front, lateral and rear impact tests. The passenger compartment was rated stable in the crash tests. It offered satisfactory protection to the heads & legs of the front passengers and adequate protection for other critical body parts. However, there was inadequate protection to the driver’s chest in the side pole lateral impact test.
  • In the Child Occupant Protection (COP), the Atto 3 again offered good protection in both frontal offset and side barrier impact tests to all critical body areas of both six- and ten-year-old child dummies.
  • With the help of Advanced Driver-Assist Systems (ADAS), the BYD Atto 3 add another layer of protection for both passengers and vulnerable road users. During the tests, the Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) and Lane Departure System served nicely. But the lack of driver fatigue detection anchored some of its points. Also, the protection provided by the bonnet to the head of pedestrians’ who might run into it or fall onto it by accident was good to adequate. The bumper too offered good protection to pedestrians’ legs, but protection of the pelvis region was insufficient.

Author’s Take

An agency with relatively strict crash test protocols has proven the BYD Atto 3 safe, which is good news for Indian consumers considering buying the vehicle. Its bookings are already underway in India for a token amount of Rs 50,000, while its prices will be revealed in December this year. The first batch of 500 units of the Atto 3 will be delivered in January 2023.
